Fumbling the Future: How Xerox Invented, Then Ignored, the First Personal Computer has this gem on how the legendary Robert Taylor handled disagreements:

When arguments got heated Taylor engaged the combatants to convert "Class 1 disagreements" into "Class 2 disagreements". Class 1 disagreements are when neither party can describe to the other's satisfaction the other's point of view. Class 2 disagreements are when each party can describe to the other's satisfaction the other's point of view.

Reaching a "Class 2 disagreement" often produced a common technical understanding and approach since both parties shared information and learned from each other in the process of getting there.
